At least 35 people were killed and 43 others injured when a car drove into a group of people exercising outside a sports center in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, China. The incident occurred on Monday evening, November 11, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Local police reported that the driver of the car, a 62-year-old man, has been arrested. Authorities described the incident as a "severe and brutal attack," with the suspect allegedly deliberately running the vehicle into individuals exercising in the area. The attack took place near the Zhuhai Sports Center, a popular spot for local runners and walkers, where personal vehicles are typically prohibited.
Footage from the scene shared online showed several people lying motionless in pools of blood, though these images were quickly removed from Chinese news outlets and social media. It is speculated that the authorities were controlling the information flow in anticipation of an upcoming air show in the city.
The motive of the driver remains unclear, and further details on his intentions have not been disclosed by authorities. The incident is part of a troubling series of violent attacks in China in recent months. In September, a man used a knife to kill three people and injure several others in a supermarket in Shanghai. The same month, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed near a school in southern China.
