The Norwegian government has reported that Russian aircraft have breached its airspace three times in 2025, calling the incidents “unacceptable.” The disclosure was made on Tuesday, as authorities confirmed details of the violations, which were also reported by the French news agency AFP.

According to Norway, the first violation took place on April 25, when a Russian Su-24 fighter jet crossed into its airspace for approximately four minutes. The second occurred on July 24, when an L-410 Turbolet transport plane remained in Norwegian airspace for around three minutes. The most recent breach happened on August 18, when a Russian Su-33 fighter jet entered for about one minute.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, in a statement, said that Russia had violated Norway’s airspace three times during the spring and summer. While acknowledging the limited scope of the incursions, he nonetheless stressed the seriousness of such actions.

“We are not certain whether these were deliberate or the result of navigational errors,” Støre said. “But regardless of the cause, it is unacceptable.”

The prime minister further pointed out that while the violations in Norway were smaller in scale in terms of duration and location compared to incidents involving other European states such as Estonia, Poland, and Romania, Oslo was treating them with great seriousness.

Norway’s strategic position makes such developments particularly sensitive. As a NATO member, the country is often referred to as the alliance’s “eyes and ears” in the far north, due to its proximity to the Arctic and its direct border with Russia. The two nations share a maritime boundary as well as a land border stretching 198 kilometers (132 miles).

The incidents come at a time of heightened tensions between NATO and Russia, with increased military activity in northern Europe. Analysts note that even limited or brief airspace breaches can carry significant political and security implications, especially given Norway’s critical role in monitoring northern flank activities for the alliance.

Norwegian officials have indicated that while the incursions were short in duration, they underscore the need for constant vigilance. Discussions with NATO allies are expected to continue, as member states closely watch Russia’s activities in the region.

For Norway, the matter raises both immediate security concerns and broader questions about stability in the High North, where competition over strategic resources, shipping lanes, and military influence has been steadily increasing.
