The government has officially raised the maximum age limit for entry into public sector jobs to 32 years through an ordinance issued yesterday. According to the ordinance, this new age limit will also apply to direct recruitment in autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory government authorities, and public non-financial corporations.

President Md. Sahabuddin issued the ordinance, stipulating that the maximum age limit for entering any cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) is now set at 32 years. Similarly, the same age limit will apply to non-cadre government jobs falling outside the purview of the BCS.

The ordinance, however, does not address the interim government's decision to allow candidates a maximum of three attempts at the BCS examination, a policy announced earlier.

Previously, the maximum age for government job applicants was capped at 30 years. The demand to raise it to 35 years has been a long-standing issue championed by the "Students' Coordination Council for a 35-Year Age Limit for Job Applications," which has organized multiple protests over the years. Responding to these demands, the government formed a committee on September 30, headed by former caretaker government advisor Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury. The committee recommended increasing the age limit to 35 years for general candidates and 37 years for women.

However, on October 24, the interim government decided to extend the age limit to 32 years instead of 35. Dissatisfied with this decision, the protestors vowed to continue their movement for the original demand. Despite their ongoing demonstrations, the ordinance officially setting the maximum age limit at 32 years was issued yesterday.
