Bangladeshis residing in Fort Collins, Colorado, celebrated the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh) with a vibrant event full of storytelling, conversations, songs, and cultural performances. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Student Association at Colorado State University (BSA-CSU) and was attended by the local Bengali community from Greater Fort Collins.
Held on Saturday, April 26, at the University Village Center of CSU, the celebration brought together the community in joyous festivities to mark the arrival of the Bengali New Year. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as attendees, both young and old, participated in the colorful event.
Everyone, including children and adults, donned traditional Bengali attire, such as sarees and Punjabi dresses, in celebration of the occasion. The event was particularly notable for the participation of children and teenagers, many of whom are growing up in the U.S. but still embraced the cultural traditions of Bangladesh with enthusiasm.
The celebration featured a range of activities, beginning with a children's drawing competition. This was followed by the introduction of the newly formed executive committee of the BSA-CSU. The event then shifted to a delicious traditional Bangladeshi lunch, offering an array of dishes such as popular mashed vegetables, fish, curry, jalebi, and payesh, bringing the flavors of Bangladesh to the attendees.
In the afternoon, a vibrant cultural program took place, where participants engaged in poetry recitations, songs, and various cultural performances. The event was enriched by performances from both adults and children, showcasing the community’s deep connection to their cultural heritage. Another highlight of the day was the organization of traditional Bangladeshi games, including marble races, biscuit races, pillow games, and musical chairs. These games brought out the playful spirit of all attendees, with participation from people of all ages—children, teenagers, and adults alike.
Apart from the Bangladeshis living in Greater Fort Collins, many others from various parts of Colorado also joined the celebration, strengthening the bonds of the Bengali diaspora in the state.
The event was conducted under the leadership of BSA-CSU Vice President Abdullah Al Fattah Tushar and General Secretary Rakibul Talukdar. The program was presided over by Vice President Fahim Hasan. The event also saw the presence of several members of the BSA-CSU advisory board, including Mo. Safayet Arefin, SM Jamil Uddin, Miftah Ahmed, Zubair Chowdhury, Yasmin Akter Tukun, Moyukh Roy, Taib Ahmed, Azmal Hossain, and Farzana Khan, along with other members of the executive committee.
