Blast on Train Bound for Peshawar Leaves Over 30 Injured; Investigation Underway in Balochistan
A deadly bomb explosion rocked Quetta railway station in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province early Saturday, November 9, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 30. According to reports by prominent Pakistani media outlet Jang, the blast occurred as the Peshawar-bound express train was preparing to depart from Quetta station. Meanwhile, Dawn reported a slightly lower death toll of 16.
Superintendent of Police Operations Muhammad Baloch said that as the train was about to leave the station, a powerful explosion shook the area, claiming 21 lives and injuring over 30. Approximately 100 people were present at the site during the blast. Authorities fear the death toll may rise, given the critical condition of several injured passengers.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, although police suspect it could be a suicide bombing. Balochistan’s Chief Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack, stating, “Those who target innocent civilians are enemies of humanity.” He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
