India’s Ministry of External Affairs has affirmed that all ongoing border security measures, including the installation of fences, lights, and monitoring devices along the India-Bangladesh border, are being carried out in full compliance with existing agreements and protocols between the two nations. This statement came after a meeting with Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner to India, Md. Nurul Islam, on Monday, January 12.

The Indian government emphasized that the measures are aimed at enhancing border security and addressing transnational issues such as criminal activities, smuggling, and illegal movement along the border. A notification regarding this matter has also been published on the Ministry’s official website.

Tensions between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) escalated last week when India attempted to install fences in certain border areas. This led to heightened exchanges between the two border forces and a temporary halt in construction activities following a flag meeting.

In response to these developments, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, was summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Sunday to discuss the matter. The following day, Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner to India was called to a meeting in New Delhi, where India reiterated its commitment to adhering to all bilateral agreements and protocols while implementing its border security measures.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized its determination to tackle cross-border criminal activities and ensure the safety of the border. It assured that all security enhancements, including fencing, are being carried out with due regard to the cooperation and agreements between the two governments and their respective border forces.

The statement also highlighted India’s intention to maintain a collaborative approach with Bangladesh in addressing border-related challenges and reaffirmed its commitment to working together for the mutual benefit of both nations.
