Mahmudullah Riyad, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a storied career. The all-rounder, who had already retired from Test and T20I formats, confirmed his decision to step away from One Day Internationals (ODIs) in a heartfelt post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday night.
In his post, Mahmudullah wrote, “All praise to Almighty Allah. I have decided to retire from international cricket. I would like to thank all my teammates, coaches, and especially my fans who have supported me throughout my journey.”
He expressed gratitude to his family, saying, “I want to thank my parents, my in-laws, especially my father-in-law, and most importantly, my brother Emdadullah, who has been my coach and mentor since childhood. Lastly, I thank my wife and children, who stood by me during tough times. I know the red and green jersey will miss me.”
Reflecting on his career, Mahmudullah added, “Not everything ends perfectly. But you have to say ‘yes’ and move forward. Peace… Alhamdulillah. Best wishes to my team and Bangladesh cricket.”
Mahmudullah had retired from Test cricket in 2021 after a match against Zimbabwe in Harare and stepped away from T20Is in October 2024 following a series against India. He continued playing ODIs but faced criticism for his recent performances, including a disappointing outing in the Champions Trophy.
The 38-year-old leaves behind a remarkable legacy. In 239 ODIs, he scored 5,689 runs at an average of 36.46 and a strike rate of 77.64, including four centuries and 32 fifties. He also took 82 wickets with his off-spin, with a best bowling figure of 3/4. In Tests, he amassed 2,914 runs in 50 matches, including five centuries and 16 fifties. In T20Is, he scored 2,444 runs in 141 matches, with eight fifties to his name.
Mahmudullah’s retirement marks the end of an era for Bangladesh cricket, as fans and teammates alike celebrate his contributions to the sport.
