Amid the ongoing unrest in the country, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called on the nation to maintain peace and unity across all communities, irrespective of religion or political affiliation. In a meeting held at the state guest house Jamuna in Dhaka on Wednesday, the Chief Adviser addressed senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), emphasizing the importance of solidarity among the people, including students, the general public, and religious communities such as Hindus and Muslims.
Following the meeting, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media, reiterating Dr. Yunus’s appeal for calm. "The Chief Adviser has urged the nation to uphold peace and focus on fostering national unity," said Alam. The BNP delegation, led by the party’s Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, echoed similar sentiments, advocating for a unified approach to navigate the current challenges.
The discussion came against the backdrop of the recent killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram, which has sparked tension and unrest in the area. Press Secretary Alam assured the public that the government is taking all necessary measures to address the situation and restore normalcy.
According to Alam, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have already detained 33 individuals in connection with the incidents. Of these, six suspects were identified based on video footage related to Saiful Islam’s murder. Additionally, 21 individuals were apprehended for involvement in clashes and attacks, while six members of political organizations, including the ruling party’s student wing, were detained with weapons.
“The government has taken prompt and necessary actions to stabilize the situation,” said Alam, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and public safety.
During the meeting, BNP leaders stressed the need for collective efforts to address the country's pressing issues. In attendance from BNP were notable figures, including Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salauddin Ahmed. The leaders discussed the importance of political dialogue and cooperation to overcome the growing challenges facing the nation.
Highlighting the urgency of unity, Dr. Yunus stated, “In times like these, it is crucial for all citizens—students, political leaders, and people from all communities—to come together for the greater good of the country.”
The Chief Adviser’s call for calm and unity comes at a critical juncture, as political tensions and incidents of violence threaten the nation’s stability. By bringing diverse voices together at the negotiation table, the government seeks to build a consensus that fosters long-term peace and collaboration.
As the country awaits further developments, the Chief Adviser’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and constructive dialogue in navigating turbulent times.
