On Sunday night (February 2), students from government-run Titumir College lifted their blockade of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after a two-hour protest. The students had blocked the road at the Mahakhali Amtoli intersection, but by 8 PM, they moved away from the highway and began marching back to their campus. However, they have continued their protest by blocking the road in front of the college campus.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, Russell Sarwar, the blockade of the highway had caused traffic to come to a halt. The traffic resumed normally once the students vacated the road at around 8 PM. However, the road from Mahakhali to Gulshan is still blocked at the time of reporting.
The student organization, Titumir Oikkya, announced that an emergency press conference would be held at 11 PM, where further plans for future protests would be revealed.
Earlier in the evening, at around 6 PM, the students started their road blockade in response to comments made by Education Advisor Professor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud. He stated that there were no immediate plans to grant Titumir College any special privileges. This sparked the protest, which was called "Barasat Barricade to North City," referring to the road block as a means to express their demands.
The students have been on a hunger strike since Thursday, demanding that Titumir College be declared a university. Along with their hunger strike, they have also been blocking roads as part of their protest. Today, however, the students decided to ease their road blockade in consideration of the final prayers (Akheri Munajat) of the World Ijtema, a major religious event.
It’s worth noting that the protest began last Thursday when a group of students staged a hunger strike and blocked the road in front of the campus gate. On that day, from 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM, students had blocked the main road near the college entrance. The protests continued on Friday and Saturday, with students blocking roads for the third consecutive day.
