Tulip Siddiq, a minister in the UK’s ruling Labour Party and niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been questioned regarding allegations of corruption tied to a Bangladeshi nuclear energy project. The information was revealed in a report published by The Times magazine on Sunday, December 22.
The report stated that Siddiq was questioned by the UK Cabinet Office’s Propriety and Ethics Team over claims that she assisted her family in siphoning off approximately £3.9 billion from the project. The project in question, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, was a £10 billion venture initiated in 2013 in collaboration with Russia.
According to The Sunday Times, Siddiq, who serves as Economic Secretary to the Treasury, allegedly facilitated the deal for her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, and the Bangladeshi government. However, the minister has met with the ethics team and denied the allegations against her.
The report further mentioned that Siddiq has not provided any public comment on the matter. A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office stated that Siddiq had already denied any involvement in the allegations.
As the Economic Secretary, Siddiq holds significant responsibilities in combating financial misconduct within the UK. The accusations have raised concerns about her role in negotiating the nuclear power plant deal, which reportedly involved substantial overspending.
The matter remains under scrutiny, with no official statement from Siddiq beyond her denial of the claims.
