- Traffic halted on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, causing severe congestion
In Gazipur, garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway again on Wednesday, November 13, demanding their unpaid wages for October. The protest began at around 8:30 a.m. in the Gazipura area of Gazipur City Corporation, with employees of a garment factory called Tex taking to the streets.
According to police and local sources, the workers initially staged a demonstration outside the factory. Eventually, they marched to the highway and blocked it, bringing all traffic to a standstill and causing extensive congestion on both sides of the road.
Assistant Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, Mosharraf Hossain, said that the workers were protesting to demand their October wages. Police are currently working to convince the protesters to clear the highway.
This follows a similar protest earlier in the week, when workers from the TNZ factory blocked the same highway for 60 continuous hours, only withdrawing their protest on the night of Monday, November 11, after assurances regarding their wages.
