An online portal recently reported that Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi, co-coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, earned Tk 32 crore in just four months through various interventions. The portal later deleted the article and issued an apology.
Hasnat Abdullah, the convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, addressed the matter on Wednesday evening through a post on his verified Facebook account. In his post, Hasnat stated that this type of propaganda has been ongoing since June.
He mentioned, “At first, Saddam claimed we had allegedly received Tk 100 crore to organize the movement. Then on August 4, it was said we were caught trying to escape with money. A few days ago, rumors of embezzling Tk 200 crore surfaced. Now, they are alleging Talat Rafi consumed Tk 32 crore. A name-only newspaper published this story without any credible sources, and everyone believed it. Let these rumors continue. We’ve fought against such propaganda before, even during the fall of Hasina’s regime, and we’ll fight again. This struggle is part of our destiny.”
Hasnat questioned the motives behind such allegations, adding, “Who benefits from tarnishing the reputation of those who refuse to compromise with Hasina’s administration by making baseless accusations?”
Meanwhile, Rafi himself released a video message on social media this evening, vehemently denying the allegations. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I am deeply disappointed by these baseless claims. I have always been loyal to the principles of our movement, and the allegations against me are nothing but part of a larger conspiracy.”
In his video statement, Rafi called for a proper investigation into the accusations and demanded that those behind the conspiracy be brought to justice. He also urged the government to ensure a transparent inquiry into the matter to reveal the truth.
