Dhaka, November 18 – After briefly lifting their blockade, students of Titumir College resumed protests on the roads in front of their institution Monday evening, reigniting traffic disruptions in the capital’s Mohakhali area. The students are demanding the transformation of Titumir College into a university and expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of any formal announcement regarding the formation of a commission for this purpose.
Earlier in the day, students blocked both roads and railway tracks in Mohakhali starting at 11:00 AM, halting traffic and train operations for four-and-a-half hours. While the blockade was withdrawn in the afternoon, enabling the resumption of traffic flow, commuters in surrounding areas like Mohakhali, Amtoli, and Jahangir Gate faced severe congestion due to the earlier demonstrations.
During the protest, demonstrators attempted to stop a train traveling from the airport to Kamalapur. When the train slowed but did not come to a complete halt, protesters hurled stones and bricks, injuring several passengers, including a child. Windows of the train were also damaged in the incident.
To manage the escalating situation, law enforcement officers were deployed at various points in Mohakhali. Despite these measures, the renewed protests caused further disruptions to daily life, with students vowing to continue until their demands are addressed.
The protests underline growing frustration among students, who insist on a timely resolution to their demands for university status for Titumir College.
