National Citizens Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has warned that the repeated attacks on Interim Government Adviser Mahfuz Alam are part of a larger pattern of political targeting, and that others will inevitably become victims in the next phase. His remarks came in a strongly worded Facebook post on Saturday following an attempted assault on Mahfuz Alam in London.

Nahid Islam described Mahfuz Alam as a central figure in the recent mass uprising and argued that the repeated assaults against him—first in the United States and now in the United Kingdom—were not isolated incidents but deliberate acts of political intimidation. According to him, these attempts were orchestrated by what he termed as “Awami fascists,” whose main objective is to silence one of the most vocal critics of authoritarian politics.

He stressed that the persistent targeting of Mahfuz Alam reveals a broader political strategy that threatens all opposition figures. “Mahfuz Alam is the target now, but the next step is that we all will be targets,” Nahid Islam wrote, adding that the political climate leaves no doubt about what awaits those who oppose entrenched power structures.

In his post, he also accused sections of the interim government of complicity, stating that there has never been a strong stance taken to protect Mahfuz Alam despite multiple attacks. He noted that no adviser, press secretary, or official statement has been issued in his defense. According to Nahid, this silence amounts to “tacit approval” of the assaults, suggesting that even within the interim administration there are forces working against Mahfuz Alam.

He further alleged that Mahfuz Alam and others are being used for political purposes only to be abandoned when their lives are at risk. “This government and its advisers have exploited Mahfuz, and now they are pushing him to the brink of death,” Nahid Islam wrote. He vowed that these acts would not be forgotten and that there would be a political response to such betrayals.

Commenting on the broader implications, Nahid Islam warned that the growing culture of silence, division, and vengeance is paving the way for the return of fascism in Bangladesh. While Mahfuz Alam has been advocating for inclusive politics rooted in responsibility and empathy, Nahid argued that Bangladesh has not chosen this path. Instead, he said, the opposition to authoritarianism has taken a reactionary and revenge-driven turn, creating a fertile ground for fascism to re-emerge.

He predicted that history would eventually vindicate Mahfuz Alam’s position, though he feared that Alam might not live long enough to see that outcome. “Time will prove that Mahfuz Alam was right, if only he gets the chance to survive,” Nahid wrote.

The recent attack in London has added to the sense of urgency surrounding the safety of Mahfuz Alam, who has already faced attempts of physical assault abroad. His supporters argue that his prominence as an adviser to the interim government and his vocal role during the uprising make him a prime target for those seeking to stifle dissent.

As the situation continues to unfold, questions remain over whether the interim government will take concrete steps to ensure the protection of its advisers. For now, Nahid Islam’s warning stands as a stark reminder of the dangers facing political dissidents and the uncertain road ahead for Bangladesh’s democratic aspirations.
