A violent confrontation between Khulna University students and transport workers occurred on Wednesday evening, following an alleged incident of student mistreatment. The clash led to a shutdown of bus services at the Sonaadanga Bus Terminal, affecting all routes in and out of the city.
The incident unfolded around 5 PM when a Khulna University student traveling from Gopalganj to Khulna by Rajib Paribahan bus had a dispute with the bus staff over the fare. According to reports, the bus workers did not allow the student to disembark at the university, instead taking the student to the bus terminal, where they allegedly assaulted him.
Upon learning of the incident, several fellow students gathered at the Sonaadanga Bus Terminal in protest. Tensions escalated when transport workers reportedly attacked more students at the scene. Among the injured were Khulna University students Ashik, Siam, Jisan Ahmed, Arup Basu, Hriday, and Shahriar Parvez Sade. In addition to the student injuries, there were accusations that the transport workers had also mistreated a university teacher.
As news of the incident spread, more students gathered at the bus terminal, demanding justice for their peers and teachers. The protests intensified, with students reportedly chasing the transport workers. This led to a chaotic scene, including the vandalism of vehicles and the throwing of bricks and stones.
Security forces, including the army, police, and navy, were deployed to the area to control the situation. Reports indicate that the workers claimed the students had also damaged several vehicles during the protest.
Khulna Metropolitan Police's Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Howlader Sanwar Masum confirmed the situation and stated that extra law enforcement personnel had been deployed to ensure calm. Authorities are actively working to de-escalate the conflict between both sides.
At the time of this report, bus services from the Sonaadanga Bus Terminal remained suspended, and tensions were still high in the area.
