July Smriti Foundation Secretary Emphasizes Need for Student Union Elections to Foster New Leadership
Sarjis Alam, General Secretary of the July Smriti Foundation and Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stressed the importance of sustaining the newfound freedom that thousands of students fought for. He urged that the progress achieved through the recent student movement should not be lost in just weeks or months. Speaking at a discussion in the Vice-Chancellor’s office at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Saturday (November 9), Sarjis expressed concerns over the dominance of factional student politics over the last 16 years, which he claimed disrupted campus systems and compromised student rights.
"Our demand is that the universities remain student-friendly and that new leadership for national politics emerges from campuses," Sarjis said, highlighting the need for student union elections to support this vision.
Also present at the discussion, the university's Acting Registrar, Syed Salim Mohammad Abdul Kadir, moderated the event. Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Islam Hossain praised the July Smriti Foundation for supporting families of those injured or killed in the movement, a foundation he sees as a key part of the interim government's response to the struggle for a new Bangladesh.
He added, "There are already attempts to undermine the revolution, but we are committed to safeguarding the freedom won through the sacrifices of countless lives."
University leaders, including Professor Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, Professor Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed, Professor Dr. Md. Jamal Uddin, and Professor Dr. Salma Akhtar, were also present at the meeting, supporting the call for a student union to strengthen democratic values on campus.
