The career trajectory of Bollywood star Deepika Padukone seems to be going through a challenging phase as she steps away from yet another major project. After previously opting out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film, the actress has now been confirmed to be absent from the sequel of Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898.
Deepika’s most recent release was Kalki 2898, a big-budget sci-fi epic that generated significant buzz across the industry and among fans. Since the film’s release, speculation had been rife over whether she would reprise her role in the follow-up. Audiences were eagerly awaiting to see her once again on the big screen in this high-profile franchise. However, their expectations have been dampened following the official announcement from the production house.
In a formal post on social media, the producers clarified their decision, stating: “After long discussions, we want to inform you that Deepika Padukone will not be part of the sequel to Kalki 2898. While we worked together on the first film, it has not been possible to continue this collaboration in the second installment. A project of this scale demands an extraordinary level of commitment, and unfortunately, that could not be aligned at this time. We wish Deepika the very best for her journey ahead.”
The statement triggered disappointment among her fans, many of whom had been looking forward to her continued presence in the futuristic franchise. Industry observers believe the primary reason behind her exit was the challenge of accommodating the extensive shooting schedule required for the film.
On the personal front, Deepika has been devoting more time to her family. She became a mother to a baby girl on September 8 last year, and in recent weeks she has been seen celebrating her daughter’s first birthday with a homemade cake and close family members. According to those close to her, the actress has been prioritizing family life and motherhood during this period, balancing her career choices with her personal commitments.
Her decision to step back from the Kalki sequel echoes a similar situation earlier when she was unable to join Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s project, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. Even so, Deepika remains in the spotlight with other potential ventures. Around the same time, news surfaced of her collaboration with director Atlee, in which she is expected to share the screen with popular South Indian actor Allu Arjun.
Although the announcement of her absence from the Kalki sequel has come as a setback for fans, Deepika’s versatility and star power continue to make her one of the most sought-after names in Indian cinema. The production house’s statement highlighted mutual respect between the two sides, suggesting that while this collaboration may not continue, the possibility of future projects remains open.
For now, Kalki enthusiasts will watch with interest to see who steps into the sequel and how the franchise develops without one of its leading faces. Meanwhile, Deepika’s fans are likely to wait eagerly for her return in Atlee’s much-talked-about film, marking yet another chapter in her evolving career.
