A group of ten lawyers has issued a legal notice to the Home Minister, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and the Inspector General of Police, Baharul Alam, urging them to take immediate and effective steps to curb the growing incidents of robbery, rape, and general lawlessness across Dhaka and the rest of the country. The notice, sent by Supreme Court lawyer Al Mamun Russell on behalf of the group, highlights the alarming rise in crimes such as snatching, armed robbery, and sexual assault, posing significant threats to public safety.

Speaking to the media, the notice sender, lawyer Al Mamun Russell, expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating security situation, particularly in the capital, Dhaka, and the increasing frequency of such crimes. He added that if the authorities fail to address the issue promptly, the lawyers will approach the High Court with a public interest writ petition, seeking orders to restore order and ensure the safety of citizens.

In the notice, the lawyers pointed out the alarming rise in incidents where criminals are openly brandishing pistols, knives, and machetes in public, threatening innocent civilians with violence. These crimes, often carried out in broad daylight, include robbery and snatching, where victims are left in fear for their lives. Additionally, the notice highlights a disturbing increase in sexual assault cases, further intensifying public fear and insecurity.

The notice paints a grim picture of the current state of law and order, where ordinary citizens are finding it increasingly unsafe to go about their daily lives. Lawyers have expressed concern about the growing risks faced by people, particularly women and children, who are vulnerable to violence in public spaces. The notice also emphasizes the heightened threat to businesses, education institutions, and households, where women and families are left feeling unsafe due to the rising crime rates.

The legal notice comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents in which criminals have used weapons to intimidate and rob victims in broad daylight. There have also been increasing reports of violent assaults, including sexual violence, further compounding the public's fears about safety. As a result, citizens are increasingly hesitant to venture out, with many businesses and educational institutions reporting disruptions due to the widespread fear among the general population.

In response to this growing crisis, the group of lawyers is demanding that the government take immediate action to address the breakdown in law and order. They have urged the Home Minister and the IGP to implement measures that will restore public confidence in the safety of their communities and ensure that those responsible for these crimes are swiftly brought to justice.

The legal notice serves as a warning to the authorities that the situation cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. If the government fails to take meaningful steps to curb the rise in crime, the lawyers have vowed to take further legal action, including filing a writ petition in the High Court, seeking directives for immediate intervention.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, the citizens of Dhaka and the rest of the country are growing increasingly concerned about their safety. Public confidence in the authorities’ ability to protect citizens is at an all-time low, and the call for urgent action has never been more pressing. Whether the authorities will respond effectively remains to be seen, but the legal notice has undoubtedly placed the issue on the national agenda, demanding accountability and action from those in power.
