Total infections in June rise to 145; 7 deaths reported this month as local health officials confirm a resurgence in coronavirus cases
Chattogram, June 30 —
Chattogram has reported 10 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the latest update from the Chattogram District Civil Surgeon’s Office on Monday afternoon. With these new cases, the total number of infections in the port city for the month of June has reached 145.
The Civil Surgeon’s Office confirmed that 219 samples were tested in the past 24 hours, out of which 10 came back positive for the coronavirus. The newly identified patients were diagnosed at multiple testing centers in the city. Among them, one patient was tested at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, another at National Hospital, seven at Chevron Diagnostic Centre, and one at Epic Healthcare.
This surge in new cases marks a concerning trend, as COVID-19 infections have been steadily rising in Chattogram throughout the month. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially with the increase in both positive cases and fatalities.
So far in June, seven people have died from the virus in the district. The most recent fatality occurred last Friday, when a woman named Saleha Begum passed away while undergoing treatment at Chattogram General Hospital.
Data from the Civil Surgeon’s Office also reveal a near-equal distribution in gender among the infected this month. Of the 145 confirmed cases, 72 are women, 72 are men, and one case involves a child.
Local health experts have warned that the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases could be the result of increased public mobility, laxity in mask-wearing, and reduced adherence to hygiene protocols. With monsoon season overlapping, they also express concern over the added strain on hospitals that are simultaneously dealing with dengue and other seasonal illnesses.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines, including mask-wearing in crowded areas, hand hygiene, and testing upon experiencing symptoms. Plans are underway to expand testing and awareness campaigns to help control the spread of the virus in the coming weeks.
While the overall situation remains manageable for now, the resurgence serves as a reminder that COVID-19 is still present in the community. Health officials continue to advise vulnerable populations—especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions—to take extra precautions.
As Chattogram navigates this new wave, public health agencies emphasize the importance of community cooperation in curbing further transmission and preventing another major outbreak.
