Explains Airport Magazine Incident as Unintentional, Urges Public to Understand Security Concerns

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud has stated that possessing a licensed firearm is a necessary measure to ensure his and his family’s safety amid repeated threats and attacks. His remarks came following an incident at the airport involving a magazine found in his luggage.

In a Facebook post made late Sunday night, Asif clarified the situation regarding the incident, which occurred as he was preparing to depart for Marrakesh, Morocco to attend the “OIC Youth Capital International Program.” His flight was scheduled for 6:50 AM on the same day.

"As I was packing early in the morning, I mistakenly left one magazine in my bag. Although I had already kept my licensed firearm and another magazine behind, this one remained unnoticed," he wrote. "Once it was detected during airport scanning, I immediately handed it over to my protocol officer."

Asif emphasized that the entire situation was purely accidental. “Let’s be practical—what can someone even do with just a magazine? If I had any harmful intentions, I wouldn’t have left the actual weapon behind. I had no reason to carry it knowingly,” he explained.

The youth adviser also addressed rumors circulating on social media and in some media outlets, denying allegations that he pressured anyone to suppress news about the incident. “Such claims are entirely baseless. After the incident, I was in the air for nearly 10 hours along with my team. During the long transit, when I finally got online, I was surprised to see the media frenzy that had developed.”

Asif further pointed out that, given the current political climate and the nature of his responsibilities, personal security has become a pressing concern. “Several assassination attempts have been made on leaders of popular uprisings. In such situations, when there is no official security or government protocol available, it becomes essential to take necessary steps to protect yourself and your family. I own a licensed weapon in full accordance with the law.”

He concluded his statement by encouraging others who feel threatened to explore legal avenues for ensuring their own safety. “If you, as a citizen, feel that your safety is at risk, you too can apply for a legal firearm license following the proper regulations. It’s your right.”

While the incident sparked wide public discussion, many have voiced support for Asif Mahmud’s transparency and acknowledgment of the situation. The debate has also reignited conversations around personal security, responsible firearm ownership, and the responsibilities of public figures in Bangladesh.
