Amid ongoing protests demanding a ban on the Awami League for alleged involvement in genocide, the interim government’s advisory council has convened an emergency meeting. The meeting, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, began on Saturday night at the state guest house Jamuna.
Simultaneously, for the second consecutive day, students and citizens have been demonstrating at Shahbagh in the capital, where road traffic has been halted since Saturday morning. Protesters gathered early in the day and continued voicing slogans calling for the dissolution of the Awami League.
Eyewitnesses observed demonstrators chanting slogans such as "Ban, Ban, Awami League Ban" and "Abu Sayeed Mughda, the war isn’t over." Many protesters were seen resting on the streets during the night.
The protest movement intensified following Thursday night when members of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) began a sit-in near the Chief Adviser’s residence demanding the trial and ban of the Awami League. On Friday morning, NCP’s southern region chief organizer Hasanat Abdullah announced a rally, which he later suspended in favor of calling for a blockade at Shahbagh. Thousands joined the protest, sitting on the main road from 4:40 PM, filling the area with slogans.
