Gazipur’s Sreepur witnessed a dramatic and dangerous incident on Wednesday afternoon when a battery-operated auto-rickshaw driver dragged a highway police officer for approximately one kilometer. The event took place at the Jaina Bazar area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway as law enforcement attempted to curb the movement of banned vehicles on the highway.
Eyewitnesses reported that a police officer signaled an auto-rickshaw to stop. However, instead of complying, the driver accelerated, causing the officer to latch onto the vehicle. The reckless driver continued driving at high speed, dragging the officer along the highway. A video of the shocking event surfaced on social media, depicting the officer clinging to the auto-rickshaw in a desperate attempt to stop it. The incident left the officer injured.
Following the ordeal, additional police personnel were dispatched to the scene, rescuing the injured officer and arresting the driver. The detained driver was identified as 24-year-old Jony Ahmed, a resident of Hobirbari village in the Bhaluka sub-district of Mymensingh.
The injured officer, identified as Constable Komol Das from Maona Highway Police Station, was performing his duties at Jaina Bazar when he attempted to stop the unauthorized vehicle carrying passengers. According to Constable Das, he had signaled the auto-rickshaw to stop. When it came to a halt, he attempted to take the ignition key, but at that moment, the driver suddenly accelerated. As the officer tried to board the vehicle to control the situation, the driver increased speed even further, ignoring his repeated pleas to stop. The officer stated that the driver deliberately attempted to shake him off the vehicle, dragging him for nearly a kilometer before he was eventually rescued by fellow officers.
Ayub Ali, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maona Highway Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that an emergency response was initiated as soon as the incident occurred. The injured officer was promptly rescued and provided with medical assistance. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials apprehended the suspect and seized the auto-rickshaw. The police have confirmed that legal actions will be taken against the driver following the completion of necessary procedures.
