A new chapter in symbolic national pride is unfolding at Banglabandha Zero Point in Panchagarh, as the country’s tallest flagstand is set to rise at this prominent border location. The foundation stone for the structure was officially laid on Saturday, with District Commissioner Sabet Ali inaugurating the flagstand construction along with a gate and beautification project at the site.

The inauguration ceremony drew attention from various local and regional stakeholders, with the presence of political and administrative figures underscoring the significance of the initiative. Among those in attendance were Iqbal Hossain, Ameer of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, Qari Md. Abdullah, Vice-President of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and Rezaul Karim Shaheen, Member Secretary of Tetulia Upazila BNP, alongside government officials and local residents.

According to the district administration, this project comes in response to longstanding local demands. On the Indian side of the border, directly opposite Banglabandha, a flagstand approximately 100 feet in height regularly displays the Indian national flag. In contrast, the Bangladesh side of the zero point lacked any prominent structure for hoisting the national flag at such a scale.

Residents of Panchagarh have long expressed the desire for a taller flagstand that would not only serve as a national symbol but also complement and even surpass the visibility of the Indian counterpart. With the construction of this new, higher flagstand, the red and green flag of Bangladesh will soon fly prominently at the northern frontier.

During the ceremony, District Commissioner Sabet Ali spoke about the inspiration behind the project, stating that the continuous sight of the Indian flag from the Bangladeshi side has deeply resonated with locals. He remarked that people of Panchagarh had a clear and united voice — they wanted a taller flagstand to represent their nation with pride and parity.

He added that the realization of this project marks a fulfillment of a heartfelt demand from the community, and reflects the spirit of patriotism embedded in the people of the border region. The new structure is expected to become a symbolic landmark, not just for the district, but for the country as a whole.

The initiative is part of a broader development and beautification effort at Banglabandha Zero Point, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic and symbolic presence of Bangladesh’s final northern edge. Once completed, the towering flagstand will stand as a proud beacon of sovereignty, unity, and national identity.
