Expatriate journalist Elias Hossain has called for the appointment of Mushfiqur Fazl Ansari as the Foreign Affairs Advisor, instead of his current role as Bangladesh's Ambassador to Mexico. Hossain made the demand public through a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday morning (February 20).
In the post, Hossain expressed that while Mushfiqur's appointment as the Ambassador to Mexico, overseeing seven countries in North America, was a great honor, he felt his role was not fully leveraged, particularly in light of the recent trip by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Hossain, the absence of a significant presence of Ansari at the State Department and White House was glaringly noticeable during the visit, raising concerns about the impact on Bangladesh's foreign policy.
Hossain further stated that Ansari’s extensive ties with the U.S. media, business sector, judiciary, and both Democratic and Republican circles could be of immense value to the government. He emphasized that these connections should be effectively utilized for the benefit of the country's diplomatic relations. Hossain urged the government to consider appointing Ansari as Foreign Affairs Advisor to harness his influence and experience in foreign affairs and diplomacy.
Mushfiqur Fazl Ansari began his tenure as Bangladesh's Ambassador to Mexico on January 27, 2025, as confirmed by a post he shared on his social media, marking his first day in office. Ansari, who previously edited the online news portal Just News BD, also served as the permanent representative at the United Nations and the White House. Known for his bold journalistic role, Ansari raised pertinent questions regarding Bangladesh’s position during UN and U.S. State Department briefings, highlighting his deep engagement with international diplomacy.
Before assuming his current diplomatic post, Ansari had been forced to leave Bangladesh in 2015 due to pressure from the ruling Awami League government, following his outspoken stance in journalism. His career trajectory reflects a unique blend of media and diplomatic expertise, making him a potentially valuable asset in a strategic foreign policy role for Bangladesh.
