Foreign Adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hossain has described the comments made by US intelligence official Tulsi Gabbard regarding minority persecution and the rise of religious extremism in Bangladesh as "serious." He made this statement while addressing journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. Responding to a question about the ministry's stance on Gabbard's remarks, Hossain said the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aligns with the reaction issued by the Chief Adviser's Office, which had earlier expressed deep concern and disappointment over Gabbard's statements.
On Monday, during an interview with Indian news channel NDTV in New Delhi, Tulsi Gabbard, a US intelligence official, stated that her country was concerned about incidents of religious minority persecution in Bangladesh. Later that evening, the Chief Adviser's Office issued a statement, calling Gabbard's remarks "misleading" and "damaging to Bangladesh's image and reputation."
The statement from the Chief Adviser's Office emphasized that Bangladesh is traditionally known for its peaceful and inclusive practice of Islam. It also highlighted the country's significant progress in combating extremism and terrorism. The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of religion, and maintaining social harmony.
The Foreign Adviser reiterated that Bangladesh has made remarkable strides in fighting extremism and terrorism, and the country remains dedicated to upholding its values of peace and inclusivity. He also urged international observers to rely on accurate information and avoid spreading misinformation that could harm Bangladesh's global standing.
