The process of re-arresting top criminals who are currently out on bail will begin, according to Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. He made the announcement following his visit to the Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday, January 26.

During a briefing to the media, the adviser emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to control crime, particularly the rising incidents of theft and snatching. He reassured the public that the administration is working hard to tackle the issue.

"Most of the fugitives who escaped from prison on August 5 have been recaptured. However, approximately a hundred remain at large. Efforts to apprehend these fugitives are ongoing," said the Home Affairs Adviser. He added that the police force is fully engaged in addressing the rise in theft and snatching incidents and assured that there is no shortage of manpower within the police force.

Jahangir Alam also shared that the process of re-arresting the top criminals who are out on bail will be initiated soon, and those arrested will be held accountable under the law.

In addition, he stated that the government will take steps to provide rehabilitation and employment opportunities for the inmates injured during incidents in July and August.

The Home Affairs Adviser also commented on the performance of the police force, acknowledging that although there is no shortage of police personnel, there has been a noticeable decline in their previous level of enthusiasm.

To improve the experience of prisoners' families, a new helpline was inaugurated during the visit. The helpline, at ‘09612021690,’ will allow families of prisoners to access information about inmates in 68 jails across the country. Through this service, relatives will be able to obtain details about their loved ones' location, hearing dates, visitation schedules, phone call dates, physical condition, and parole status. They will also be able to file complaints or provide feedback.

Regarding the prison system, the adviser assured that conditions in the jails are generally well-maintained, though the number of inmates exceeds the capacity of the facilities.
