The Government's Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has clarified that regular field-level police officers will not be equipped with heavy lethal weapons. While standard firearms like rifles will remain accessible to general law enforcement personnel, heavier combat-grade weapons will be reserved exclusively for specialized units such as the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).

He made this statement on Saturday, June 14, at approximately 11 a.m., following a visit to the headquarters of the APBn in Dhaka. Addressing reporters after the inspection, the adviser stressed the importance of modernization and structured development within the country's law enforcement framework.

According to Chowdhury, the government's ongoing initiatives are focused on enhancing the capabilities and professionalism of various security forces, including the APBn and local police stations. He noted that the Armed Police Battalion, being a specialized and tactical unit, is appropriately suited for the responsibility of handling heavy weaponry when required. This distinction, he suggested, is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and public trust.

During his address, the Home Affairs Adviser also reflected on the achievements of the interim government over the past eleven months. He remarked that there has been a significant improvement in the country’s law and order situation. Despite a few minor incidents, the recent Eid celebrations were largely peaceful across the nation—a development he attributed to coordinated efforts by the law enforcement agencies.

Chowdhury's remarks come in the context of broader governmental reforms aimed at professionalizing the police force while ensuring the appropriate allocation of military-grade equipment. He reaffirmed that strategic modernization will continue under the current administration, with special emphasis on training, accountability, and resource management for all branches of law enforcement.

The adviser concluded by reiterating the government's commitment to public safety and security, emphasizing the need for balanced force deployment that meets the country's law enforcement needs without escalating militarization among general policing units.
