Inqilab Mancha has announced an overnight sit-in at Shahbagh, demanding the immediate arrest of activist Laki Akter and others accused of fascist alliances, as well as the resolution of rape cases within three months. The organization has vowed to continue its movement until their demands are met.
On Wednesday (March 12), the organization's Secretary, Abdullah Al Jaber, informed the media about the ongoing demonstration.
Since 3 PM on Wednesday, members of Inqilab Mancha have been staging a human chain in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh.
The five-point demands put forward by Inqilab Mancha are:
Ensuring the highest punishment for rape through a fast-track tribunal, resolving cases within 90 days, and prosecuting those who file false accusations.
Arresting those who incite mobs to attack police forces and destabilize the country.
Arresting Laki Akter and others involved in past conspiracies of 2013.
Conducting an independent investigation, with UN involvement, into past massacres including the Shapla Square incident.
Banning the Awami League after initiating visible trials for the July massacre.
Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Hadi claimed that an individual at Shahbagh had attacked the police without provocation. He further alleged that Police Commissioner Mamun was severely beaten by a group of assailants. Hadi questioned whether the police had any batons during the incident, arguing that protesters initially gathered to demand justice for rape victims but later shifted their slogans against Yunus. He accused the Awami League of using Shahbagh activists as their final weapon.
He further stated, “If we were like the Shahbagh activists, we would have hanged them in Shahbagh. But we are not like them; we seek justice from the government.”
Demanding justice, Hadi continued, “There are at least a thousand reasons why these killers, including Laki Akter, should be in jail. Yet, she is still out on the streets protesting. We will not tolerate this any longer. The government must ensure their prosecution.”
During the human chain, Inqilab Mancha’s central secretary Abdullah Al Jaber warned, “Shahbagh is rising again, and we will not let it happen. People like Laki should be behind bars, not leading protests.”
Fatima Akter Jhuma, Secretary of the Dhaka University branch of Inqilab Mancha, said, “People took to the streets to protest against rape, and the government has taken steps. However, those at Shahbagh have focused more on calling for executions instead of demanding justice. They were instrumental in past crackdowns on religious scholars, and now they are trying to regain influence. Shahbagh will never rise again; the culture of impunity must end.”
AB Jubair, a student of Dhaka University, added, “These activists like Laki Akter may be flying their kites in the sky of Bangladesh, but their strings are controlled by India. As long as we are alive, their agenda will not succeed.”
