The interim government of Bangladesh has formed a high-level committee to investigate the recent foreign travel of former President Abdul Hamid. The decision was announced on Sunday in response to widespread public criticism and protests following his departure from the country while facing a murder case. The announcement was made by Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
The three-member committee is headed by Professor C. R. Abrar, Advisor for Education Affairs. The other two members include Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor for Environment, Forest and Climate Change as well as Water Resources, and Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor for Shipping and Labor & Employment.
Abdul Hamid reportedly traveled to Thailand through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on May 7. The incident stirred intense public outcry due to the fact that he is a named accused in a murder case. Amid growing protests and criticism, the interim administration moved to establish the inquiry committee three days after his departure.
The committee has been tasked with reviewing the circumstances under which Abdul Hamid left the country. Specifically, it will examine how he was able to travel abroad through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and whether there were any lapses, negligence, or failures on the part of the responsible authorities. The committee will also identify any individuals or agencies that failed to carry out their duties and recommend appropriate actions to be taken in those cases.
To carry out its responsibilities, the committee has been given the authority to collect necessary documents, use any required equipment, gather testimony and evidence, and summon individuals relevant to the investigation. All concerned agencies are obligated to comply with the committee’s instructions and provide full support for the investigation.
Furthermore, the committee retains the right to co-opt additional members if needed. The Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs will provide secretarial and logistical support to the committee throughout the course of the investigation.
The committee has been directed to submit its report within 15 days of formation, including findings and actionable recommendations.
