A Rohingya youth has been detained by police in connection with an alleged attempted rape of a Chakma woman in the Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The incident took place around 9:30 AM on Sunday, in the remote hilly area of Telakhola under Palongkhali Union.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, Mohammad Arif Hossain, said the accused has been identified as 28-year-old Choyedul Islam, son of Sultan Ahmed from Block D-4 of Camp 11 in the Ukhiya Rohingya refugee camp.
According to locals and community representatives, the 33-year-old Chakma woman, a resident of Ukhiya, was on her way to work at a nearby banana plantation when the alleged incident occurred. Kamal Uddin, a member of Ward 6 of the Palongkhali Union Parishad, stated that the woman was walking through a secluded area known as Bulerjhiri when she was suddenly approached from behind by the Rohingya man. He allegedly grabbed her and made inappropriate physical contact.
The suspect then reportedly covered her mouth and attempted to forcefully drag her into a nearby plantation with the intent of sexual assault. As the woman resisted and began to scream for help, locals nearby responded to her cries and rushed to the scene. The suspect tried to flee but was quickly apprehended by residents of the area.
Upon being informed of the incident, the Union Parishad member contacted local authorities. Law enforcement personnel from Ukhiya Police Station soon arrived at the location and took the accused into custody.
Ukhiya Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Arif Hossain, confirmed that the police responded promptly after receiving the report from local residents. He said the suspect has been brought to the station for further investigation.
He also noted that the family of the victim is in the process of preparing to file a formal complaint against the accused.
