Russia has expressed its desire to continue gas exploration activities in Bangladesh through its state-owned company, Gazprom International. During a meeting with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday (March 11), Russian Ambassador Alexander G. Khazin sought his support to ensure the uninterrupted operation of Gazprom’s projects in the country. The meeting took place at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka.

Gazprom has been actively involved in gas exploration in Bangladesh since 2012 and has partnered with local entities to identify potential gas reserves. In 2023, the company identified five new wells in Bhola for further exploration. Ambassador Khazin emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to strengthen energy cooperation between the two nations.

Chief Advisor Yunus thanked Gazprom for its preparations to drill the five wells in Bhola and assured the Russian delegation that the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources is actively working on the matter. He also expressed Bangladesh’s openness to further collaboration in the energy sector.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the meeting, the Russian ambassador and Chief Advisor Yunus discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including trade and commerce. Ambassador Khazin highlighted the growing economic ties between the two countries, particularly in the agricultural sector. He noted that Bangladesh has become the second-largest consumer of Russian wheat, following Egypt. From July 2024 to January 2025, Bangladesh received 2.3 million tons of Russian wheat, including 623,000 tons under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement.

In a gesture of friendship, Russia is also preparing to supply 30,000 tons of MOP fertilizer to Bangladesh. This move is expected to support the country’s agricultural sector and strengthen bilateral relations.

Increased Visa Issuance for Bangladeshis

Ambassador Khazin also mentioned the significant rise in the number of visas issued to Bangladeshis for work opportunities in Russia, particularly in agriculture and shipbuilding. He revealed that the number of visas issued from January to March 2025 had quadrupled compared to the same period last year. This trend reflects the growing demand for Bangladeshi workers in Russia and the strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Acknowledging Historical Support

Chief Advisor Yunus expressed gratitude to Russia for its support during the critical period following Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971. He acknowledged Russia’s role in standing by Bangladesh during challenging times and emphasized the importance of further deepening the bilateral relationship.

Future Prospects

The meeting underscored the potential for enhanced cooperation in energy, agriculture, and employment sectors. With Gazprom’s continued involvement in gas exploration and Russia’s support in wheat and fertilizer supply, the partnership between Bangladesh and Russia is poised to grow stronger. The increased issuance of work visas also highlights the mutual benefits of this relationship, creating new opportunities for Bangladeshi workers and contributing to the economic development of both countries.

In conclusion, Russia’s commitment to continuing gas exploration in Bangladesh and its broader economic cooperation reflect the deepening ties between the two nations. With the support of Chief Advisor Yunus and the Bangladeshi government, this partnership is expected to yield significant benefits for both countries in the coming years.
