The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has ordered the reinstatement of 1,137 candidates who were denied recruitment in the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination seventeen years ago. A five-member bench, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, delivered the verdict on Thursday, February 20, upholding the previous High Court ruling in favor of the petitioners.

Senior lawyers, including Barrister Salauddin Dolon and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, represented the petitioners in the court, while Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haque argued on behalf of the state. Following the verdict, the legal representatives of the petitioners expressed their satisfaction, stating that the country’s highest court had granted their appeal, thereby maintaining the High Court’s ruling.

As per the High Court directive, the government must complete the recruitment process for the affected candidates within 90 days. The legal dispute, spanning nearly two decades, reached its conclusion after a prolonged judicial process, with the final appeal hearing taking place on Wednesday, February 19. On that day, the Supreme Court scheduled the verdict for the following day.

With this ruling, the affected individuals, who have long fought for justice, are now set to receive their rightful employment opportunities within the stipulated timeframe. The decision marks the end of a protracted legal struggle and reaffirms the authority of judicial orders in ensuring fair recruitment practices within the civil service sector.
