Two ships carrying a total of 34,550 tons of rice have arrived at Chattogram Port, marking a significant addition to the country’s food reserves. The vessels, one from India and the other from Vietnam, docked at the port on Monday morning (March 17), according to Chattogram Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk.

The first ship, MV Tanais Dream, brought 22,500 tons of parboiled rice from India through an open tender process. The second ship, MV Hong Linh-1, transported 12,050 tons of white rice from Vietnam under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement signed on February 3.

Port Secretary Omar Faruk stated, “Both ships arrived at the port’s anchorage this morning. Sampling and testing of the rice have already begun, and we expect to complete the unloading process by evening.”

This shipment is part of Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the rice market and ensure food security. Under the G2G agreement with Vietnam, a total of 100,000 tons of rice are set to be imported. The first consignment of 17,800 tons has already arrived in the country.

Earlier, on March 15, another ship, MV Mariam, delivered 26,250 tons of white rice from Pakistan under a similar G2G agreement. Prior to that, on March 5, two ships carrying 37,250 tons of rice—26,250 tons from Pakistan and 11,000 tons from India—also arrived at Chattogram Port.

These imports come at a critical time as the government aims to replenish its rice reserves and curb market volatility. The timely arrival of these shipments is expected to ease supply pressures and stabilize rice prices across the country.

With the latest arrivals, Chattogram Port continues to play a pivotal role in facilitating the import of essential commodities, ensuring that the nation’s food security remains intact amid growing demand.
