Dhaka, January 1, 2025: Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, declared today that 2025 would be marked as the year of accountability for the Awami League and its former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. The tribunal will focus on prosecuting allegations of crimes against humanity, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and mass atrocities reported during the party's 16-year rule.
Speaking at a press conference held at the tribunal's office this afternoon, the Chief Prosecutor emphasized the ongoing investigations into the crimes allegedly committed in July and August, terming them significant instances of crimes against humanity. He stated that the tribunal is fully prepared to proceed with the trials in adherence to judicial procedures and fairness.
"The state has taken the decision to bring back the former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to ensure justice," he said, hinting at the government's cooperation in facilitating the process. However, he reiterated that the tribunal's primary focus remains on advancing the judicial process impartially.
Referring to the readiness of the tribunal, Tajul Islam mentioned that the trial sessions would commence in the newly renovated main courtroom following approval from the Chief Justice. The Chief Prosecutor assured that every crime documented under the Awami League's tenure would undergo thorough legal scrutiny.
Among those present during the announcement were prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud and Abdullah Al Noman, who echoed the commitment to uphold justice and transparency in the tribunal's proceedings.
