405 Road Accidents in October Leave 377 Dead Across Bangladesh

In October, Bangladesh witnessed a grim tally of 405 road accidents across the country, resulting in the death of 377 individuals and leaving 415 injured, according to a report by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). The data, signed by BRTA Chairman Md. Yasin, was collected through its divisional offices nationwide.

The report reveals that a total of 630 vehicles were involved in accidents during the month. Among these were 16 motor cars/jeeps, 101 buses/minibuses, 131 trucks/covered vans, 29 pickups, 10 microbuses, 3 ambulances, 136 motorcycles, 18 vans, 5 tractors, 21 electric three-wheelers (e-bikes), 16 battery-operated rickshaws, 33 auto-rickshaws, and 111 other vehicles.

Regional Breakdown

The report provides a regional analysis of the accidents:

  • Dhaka Division: 115 accidents, 114 deaths, and 142 injuries.
  • Chattogram Division: 61 accidents, 49 deaths, and 86 injuries.
  • Rajshahi Division: 45 accidents, 47 deaths, and 22 injuries.
  • Khulna Division: 40 accidents, 34 deaths, and 38 injuries.
  • Barishal Division: 29 accidents, 22 deaths, and 34 injuries.
  • Sylhet Division: 24 accidents, 23 deaths, and 27 injuries.
  • Rangpur Division: 54 accidents, 53 deaths, and 34 injuries.
  • Mymensingh Division: 37 accidents, 35 deaths, and 32 injuries.

Fatalities by Vehicle Type

The report further categorizes fatalities based on vehicle involvement:

  • Motor cars/jeeps: 9 deaths.
  • Buses/minibuses: 42 deaths.
  • Trucks/covered vans: 82 deaths.
  • Pickups: 12 deaths.
  • Microbuses: 2 deaths.
  • Motorcycles: 110 deaths.
  • Vans: 12 deaths.
  • Tractors: 1 death.
  • Electric three-wheelers (e-bikes): 14 deaths.
  • Battery-operated rickshaws: 18 deaths.
  • Auto-rickshaws: 34 deaths.
  • Other vehicles: 79 deaths.

The figures underscore the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to mitigate such tragedies in the future.
