A recent survey conducted by Voice of America (VOA) in Bangladesh reveals that 61.1% of respondents believe the next national elections should take place within a year. However, a larger portion of the population, 65.9%, feels that elections should only be held after the interim government completes necessary reforms.
The survey, carried out between October 13 and 27, showed that 31.9% of respondents favor holding elections after addressing only urgent electoral reforms. In contrast, 18.7% want elections within two to three years, and 8.6% prefer elections within 18 months. The smallest portion, 5.8%, supports holding elections after four years or more.
Additionally, 4.6% of the people surveyed had no opinion on when elections should be held, while 1.1% refrained from providing an answer.
The survey was conducted by VOA Bangla in partnership with ORG-Quest Research Ltd., covering 1,000 adults aged 18 and above across Bangladesh's eight divisions. Among urban respondents, 60.4% favor elections within a year, while 61.4% of rural respondents share the same view. Among younger participants (ages 18-34), 62.4% want elections within the year, while 59.8% of those aged 35 and older feel the same.
The survey sheds light on public sentiment regarding the interim government's reforms and the timing of the upcoming national election.
