The opening day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth witnessed unprecedented drama as 17 wickets fell, breaking a 72-year-old record for the most dismissals on the first day of a Test match in Australia since 1952.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, India struggled against Australia's pace attack led by Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc. The visitors were bowled out for 150 before completing even 50 overs.
India’s top-order crumbled, but Nitish Kumar Reddy, batting at number eight, showed resilience with a gritty 41, the highest score of the innings. However, he received little support from the tail-enders, with Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit departing in quick succession while attempting aggressive shots. Nitish’s defiance ended when he was caught off Cummins in an attempt to accelerate.
For Australia, Hazlewood claimed 4 wickets, while Starc, Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh picked up 2 wickets each.
In response, Australia also found themselves in deep trouble, reaching 67 for 7 at stumps on Day 1. The hosts are still 83 runs behind India's total, with just three wickets in hand after facing 27 overs.
Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc remain unbeaten at the crease, with Carey on 19 off 28 balls and Starc contributing 6 runs off 14 deliveries.
Bumrah led the Indian bowling attack with an outstanding spell, taking 4 wickets for just 17 runs in 10 overs.
The combined 17 wickets across two innings mark one of the most action-packed opening days in recent Test history. As the second day approaches, the low-scoring game is set for further twists in a contest already etched into the record books.
