Retired Secretary A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh. President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment under his constitutional authority. Alongside Nasir Uddin, four new Election Commissioners have also been appointed.
On Thursday (November 21), the Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, issued separate gazette notifications confirming the appointments. A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, who retired in January 2009, previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as well as the Ministry of Health.
The gazette stated that, under the authority granted by Article 118(1) of the Constitution, the President has appointed A.M.M. Nasir Uddin as the Chief Election Commissioner, effective immediately.
The four newly appointed Election Commissioners are:
- 1. Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Retired Additional Secretary.
- 2. Abdur Rahman Masud, Retired District and Sessions Judge.
- 3. Begum Tahmida Ahmed, Retired Joint Secretary.
- 4. Brigadier General Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah, Retired Army Officer.
The appointments follow recommendations from a six-member search committee led by Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division. Formed on October 29, the committee submitted a shortlist of 10 candidates to the President's office on Wednesday (November 20). The President selected the CEC and four Election Commissioners from this list.
These appointments aim to reinvigorate the Election Commission and ensure fair and transparent electoral processes in Bangladesh.
