An appeal has been filed to expedite the hearing of the appeal in the Ahsan Ullah Master murder case, seeking a swift resolution for the convicted individuals. The request was made on Tuesday, January 14, before the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. Senior lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol represented the convicted defendants in this appeal.
Ahsan Ullah Master, a prominent Awami League leader and former Member of Parliament, was assassinated on May 7, 2004, during a public rally at the MA Majid Mia High School ground in Noagao, Gazipur. He was shot in a terrorist attack. The day following the murder, Ahsan Ullah's brother, Matiur Rahman, filed a case at the Tongi police station, naming 17 individuals and implicating an additional 10 to 12 unidentified persons in the crime.
After the trial in the lower court, the case was also heard in the High Court. On April 16, 2005, the trial court sentenced 22 individuals to death, six to life imprisonment, and acquitted two. The death references were later reviewed by the High Court, and the convicted parties filed jail appeals. On January 15, 2016, the High Court upheld the death sentences for six of the accused.
In total, 30 individuals were implicated in the Ahsan Ullah Master murder case, with 28 of them being convicted. Out of the 28, 22 were sentenced to death and six received life imprisonment. Currently, 17 of the convicted individuals are serving their sentences in jail, while nine others remain fugitives. Additionally, two of the accused have passed away.
