An armed robbery on a passenger bus in Savar left at least five passengers injured on Friday (December 20). The incident occurred around 8:00 PM on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, between the Radio Colony and C&B areas, involving a bus operated by Welcome Paribahan.

The robbery took place as a group of armed men boarded the bus and began threatening passengers with sharp weapons. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants warned passengers to remain silent or face dire consequences. The attackers robbed passengers of their belongings, including wallets and mobile phones, before fleeing near Jahangirnagar University’s Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall area.

Following the robbery, passengers called for help, prompting locals to respond quickly. The injured were rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for treatment. Among the five injured, Shamim Hossain sustained severe injuries. Shamim, a resident of Kalikapur village in Kishoreganj under Nilphamari district, works at a buying house and resides in a rented home in Sripur.

Another victim, Harun-ur-Rashid, recounted the ordeal. He had boarded the Welcome Paribahan bus from Ulail Stand after visiting a garment factory in the area. Within minutes, several individuals armed with knives and other sharp weapons took control of the bus. Harun described how the robbers held the passengers at gunpoint, looted their possessions, and completed their operation swiftly before exiting near Jahangirnagar University.

Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Miah confirmed awareness of the incident. However, no formal complaint had been filed at the time of reporting. The OC assured that appropriate measures would be taken once a complaint is lodged.

The incident has left the passengers and the local community shaken, raising concerns about safety on public transport along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.
