The announcement of the names shortlisted for the Bangla Academy Awards has been suspended, as revealed by Cultural Advisor Mostofa Sarwar Farooki in a statement on Saturday, January 25. The decision was disclosed in a post on his verified Facebook account, where he expressed the need for significant policy revisions within the Bangla Academy to address longstanding issues.
Farooki’s post outlined that the decision to halt the current list was not made lightly, emphasizing the necessity to scrutinize and reform existing guidelines. According to him, the prevailing policies have allowed room for what he termed as "absurd and biased" award decisions, facilitated by certain groups. These practices, he asserted, undermine the integrity and purpose of such prestigious accolades.
The cultural advisor further stated that reviewing the academy’s operational framework will be a top priority in the coming days. This includes evaluating how the institution is managed and what principles should govern its activities to ensure transparency and fairness. "We must undertake comprehensive reforms within the academy. If reforms are essential for the country, why should Bangla Academy be exempt from them?" he questioned in his post.
The suspension has sparked widespread discussions, highlighting the growing demand for systemic changes in cultural institutions. Stakeholders and cultural enthusiasts are keenly awaiting further updates regarding the reforms and the future of the Bangla Academy Awards.
