In response to the devastating earthquakes that struck Myanmar, a rescue team from the Bangladesh Armed Forces is being deployed to the country with emergency relief materials and medical assistance. The team is scheduled to depart for Myanmar on Sunday, March 30, aboard a special aircraft, carrying essential medicines, rescue equipment, and humanitarian aid.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate released a statement on Saturday night confirming the deployment. The move comes as part of Bangladesh’s immediate humanitarian response to support its neighboring country during this time of crisis.
Myanmar experienced two powerful earthquakes in quick succession on Friday morning, March 28. According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremors measured 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude. The epicenters were located approximately 16 to 18 kilometers beneath the surface in the Sagaing region, about 250 kilometers from the capital, Naypyidaw.
The earthquakes caused widespread destruction, leaving thousands affected. The ruling military government in Myanmar has reported that at least 1,002 people have lost their lives as of the latest count. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with both local authorities and international partners mobilizing resources to aid the affected population.
Bangladesh’s decision to send its armed forces for humanitarian operations underscores its commitment to regional solidarity and cooperation in times of disaster. The rescue team will work closely with Myanmar’s authorities and other international aid organizations to support recovery efforts, provide medical treatment to the injured, and distribute essential supplies to those in need.
