Bangladesh has officially communicated with India regarding the repatriation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power through student-led protests. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam shared this information during a weekly briefing on Tuesday, December 24.

Rafiqul Alam stated that a diplomatic note concerning Sheikh Hasina’s repatriation was handed over to New Delhi on Monday. However, no formal response has been received through official channels so far. He confirmed that Bangladesh will await India’s reply before taking further steps.

If no response is received, Alam mentioned that a reminder would be sent to the Indian government. He clarified that under the terms of the extradition treaty, there is no specific timeframe for a response, as it depends on the nature of the issue.

The spokesperson further disclosed that India has been informed about Bangladesh’s dissatisfaction with Sheikh Hasina’s virtual statements, which she has been delivering from India to various countries. Bangladesh conveyed its concerns over these actions to the Indian government.

Rafiqul Alam also touched on the ongoing Rohingya crisis, emphasizing that all agencies, including the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), remain on high alert to prevent any new illegal influx from Myanmar.

Additionally, he mentioned that discussions are underway with Poland to establish an embassy in Bangladesh. The Foreign Ministry is also preparing for a visit by a UK trade delegation scheduled for January.
