Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Touhid Hossain, has confirmed that the country has not yet received any official response from India regarding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He made this statement while attending the annual general meeting of the Belabo Thana Association in the capital’s East Ashol, on the afternoon of January 4, 2025.

Earlier, on January 3, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Ranjit Jayaswal, mentioned during a weekly briefing that India had received a diplomatic note from Bangladesh concerning Sheikh Hasina's extradition. He indicated that a week prior, Bangladesh had sent a formal request for the return of Sheikh Hasina, who has been in India since her departure on August 5, following her removal from office amidst mass protests.

During the press briefing, Jayaswal was asked about the status of the diplomatic note regarding Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. In his response, he confirmed that a note regarding the request for her extradition had indeed been received, but as of then, no further developments had occurred. "I have already confirmed this earlier, and I have received the diplomatic note related to the request. At the moment, there is no additional information that I can share regarding this matter," Jayaswal stated.

A report published by the Indian national daily Hindustan Times on this issue pointed out that Bangladesh's claim for Sheikh Hasina’s return may not be legally valid. The report indicated that according to bilateral agreements, the request might face challenges, citing legal and procedural hurdles in the extradition process. The Indian foreign ministry spokesperson did not comment on the contents of this report during the briefing.

Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India on August 5, 2024, after being ousted from power following mass uprisings. Since her departure, she has been residing in India, while several cases have been filed against her in Bangladesh, including charges of murder and war crimes.

In response to these legal proceedings, Bangladesh officially sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi on December 23, 2024, requesting the extradition of Sheikh Hasina for trial. However, the Indian government has not yet provided an official statement or decision on the matter.

The case has raised significant political and diplomatic discussions between the two neighboring countries, especially with regard to legal protocols and international agreements on extradition. While Bangladesh remains firm in its stance to have Sheikh Hasina returned for judicial purposes, India has yet to clarify its position publicly.
