Bangladesh Health Watch (BHW) has expressed serious concern over the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has recently triggered outbreaks in several countries, including China and India. In a press release issued on Wednesday, BHW emphasized the need for immediate vigilance and preventive measures to tackle the potential threat of the virus.

The organization urged health authorities to strengthen surveillance systems, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and ensure the availability of medical supplies before the virus gains a foothold in Bangladesh. Highlighting the risks, BHW described HMPV as a respiratory virus that poses a significant health hazard, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

The symptoms of HMPV closely resemble those of COVID-19, ranging from mild cold-like signs to severe illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchitis. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze. It can also transmit via direct contact, such as handshakes, or by touching contaminated surfaces like doorknobs, elevator buttons, and cups, followed by contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, precautionary measures similar to those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic can effectively mitigate the spread of HMPV. These measures include wearing masks in public, washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and avoiding contact with the face.

Maintaining a safe distance from infected individuals and avoiding crowded places are also crucial. BHW advised using tissues to cover the mouth while coughing or sneezing and disposing of them immediately in sealed bins, followed by handwashing. If tissues are unavailable, sneezing into the elbow is recommended.

Additionally, the organization stressed the importance of bolstering immunity through a balanced diet, proper hydration, respiratory exercises, and seeking medical advice promptly if symptoms like fever, cough, or cold arise. BHW urged public health authorities to act proactively to protect the population from this emerging health threat.
