The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued an alert regarding the presence of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bangladesh. This action follows the identification of the virus in one individual within the country. The announcement comes amid a concerning rise in HMPV cases in China and neighboring countries in the region.
In a press release, the DGHS highlighted that the virus is spreading with alarming intensity in various parts of the world, including the subcontinent. HMPV predominantly affects children under 14 years and adults aged 65 and above. Additionally, individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are considered to be at higher risk.
The statement further emphasized that while cases of HMPV are not new to Bangladesh, the outbreak in China and other nations calls for heightened vigilance to prevent widespread transmission. To address the situation, the DGHS has urged stricter implementation of health protocols at healthcare facilities and entry points across the country.
To curb the spread of HMPV and safeguard public health, the DGHS has issued a set of recommendations and appealed to citizens to raise awareness and practice precautionary measures.
The virus, which primarily impacts the respiratory system, presents symptoms similar to the flu. These include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. In most cases, symptoms resolve within two to five days. The DGHS assured the public that there is no reason to panic but stressed the importance of adhering to preventive measures to minimize the risk of infection.
The DGHS reiterated that its Communicable Disease Control (CDC) unit is closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure that the virus remains under control in Bangladesh. They also called upon the public to stay informed and follow health advisories to protect themselves and others.
