Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has termed India's comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh as unexpected and unwarranted. The statement follows political remarks made by a former Bangladeshi Prime Minister while staying in India, which have not been well-received by the people of Bangladesh.
During a press briefing on Sunday, February 9, Ministry Spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, Director General of the Public Diplomacy Division, clarified Bangladesh’s stance regarding the recent situation. He pointed out that on February 5, the political comments made by the former Prime Minister led to an incident at 32 Dhanmondi, a notable location in Dhaka. He stated that the interim government has already clarified its position on this matter.
The Ministry emphasized that such statements made by the former Prime Minister, while residing in India, were not appreciated by the people of Bangladesh. Furthermore, he addressed a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs on February 6, which was seen as interference in Bangladesh's internal matters. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka considers India’s comments to be unexpected and undesirable.
Alam further noted that while Bangladesh has observed various internal challenges in neighboring countries, it does not comment on the domestic affairs of other nations. Bangladesh expects the same level of respect from its neighboring countries, hoping for a mutual understanding of non-interference in each other’s internal matters.
