On Thursday afternoon, the Dhaka University branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Student League (Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal) staged a protest against the police's violent actions towards protesting indigenous students. The protest was a response to police using batons and tear gas against the students demonstrating against the attacks on indigenous communities.
The protest march began at 4 PM from the Dutch Square of Dhaka University and made its way through the Vice Chancellor's residence before concluding at the Milon Chattar. Throughout the procession, participants chanted various slogans such as "Why is the police on campus? We demand an answer from the administration," "Why attack the indigenous community? We demand an answer from the administration," "Why are my brothers and sisters injured? We demand an answer from the administration," "Negotiation or struggle, struggle, struggle!" and "Who are you, who am I? We are all Bangladeshis."
Upon reaching Milon Chattar, the protesters held a brief rally. At the rally, they demanded proper medical care for the injured students and called for justice for those responsible for the attack on the indigenous student protesters.
Ganesh Chandra Roy, President of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, addressed the crowd and condemned the violence. He shared that the previous day, a group of students had peacefully gathered outside NTV station to demand their rights, but were attacked by a faction of the Chhatra League, which he accused of using tactics similar to those of the Students for Sovereignty group. In response to the attack, students had planned to submit a memorandum to the Home Affairs Advisor, but when they attempted to approach the office, police responded with tear gas and baton charges. The police even pursued the students deep into the campus grounds.
Addressing the Vice Chancellor and the Proctor, Roy demanded an explanation of how the police were allowed to carry out such an assault on students in a supposedly autonomous institution. He insisted that the university administration must answer for the police's actions.
He also emphasized the urgent need for proper medical care for the injured students and insisted that justice must be served to those responsible for the attack.
Nahiduzzaman Shipon, General Secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, expressed his concern over the recent violence against students, particularly in the wake of the July uprising. He stated that such attacks on students could not be tolerated under any circumstances. Shipon directly addressed the university administration, questioning how police were allowed to enter the campus and assault students, demanding that the authorities take responsibility for these actions.
Several other leaders of the Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, including Senior Vice Presidents Masum Billah and Anisur Rahman Khandkar Onik, Senior Joint General Secretary Nasiruddin Shaon, Joint General Secretary Shamim Akhtar Shuvo, and Organizing Secretary Nur Alam Bhuiyan Imon, as well as numerous other activists from the university and various dormitory branches, were present during the protest rally.
The protest has drawn attention to the increasing tensions between students and the university administration, particularly after recent attacks on indigenous students and their advocates. The students continue to demand accountability from the authorities, as well as assurances that such violent actions will not be repeated in the future.
