Bangladesh has formally requested India to return former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain. Speaking to the media on Monday, December 23, he stated that a diplomatic note, known as a note verbale, has been sent to the Indian government regarding the matter.
According to the advisor, this initiative was taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the intent to ensure Sheikh Hasina faces the country’s judicial process. The formal communication with India marks a significant step in ongoing legal and diplomatic measures to bring her back to Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Lieutenant General (Retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Interim Government’s Home Affairs Advisor, addressed the issue during a medal-awarding ceremony at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Pilkhana on the occasion of BGB Day. He revealed that the Ministry of Home Affairs had already written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take the necessary steps for communication with India.
Jahangir Alam noted that Sheikh Hasina’s return could be facilitated under the bilateral prisoner exchange agreement between Bangladesh and India. This agreement, in effect since 2013, allows for the extradition of individuals accused or convicted of extraditable offenses in either country.
The legal pursuit of Sheikh Hasina intensified following an arrest warrant issued against her by the International Crimes Tribunal on October 17 in connection with the July-August genocide case. This led to a series of legal and diplomatic actions aimed at ensuring her return to Bangladesh. On November 13, prosecutors formally requested the Inspector General of Police to initiate proceedings for a Red Notice through Interpol for her apprehension.
The extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India has played a pivotal role in similar cases since its implementation. The treaty allows for the handover of fugitives or convicts involved in criminal cases deemed extraditable by both nations. Authorities are optimistic that this legal framework will support their efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back to face the allegations against her.
While legal and diplomatic measures are underway, the case has drawn significant public and political attention. The government remains steadfast in its resolve to pursue justice and accountability through international cooperation and adherence to the rule of law.
