In December, Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone in remittance inflows, with expatriates sending $2.63 billion, the highest monthly figure in the country’s history. The previous record was set in July 2020, when remittances reached $2.59 billion. This data was revealed in the latest report from Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday, January 1.
According to the report, an average of $85.1 million in remittances was sent to Bangladesh each day in December. In comparison, December of the previous year saw remittances amounting to $1.99 billion. The remarkable figure for last month highlights the growing contributions of expatriates to the national economy, surpassing the record set in July 2020, when $2.59 billion was remitted.
The report also detailed the fluctuations in remittance inflows over the past months. In June, remittances stood at $2.53 billion, followed by a sharp drop in July, which recorded $1.91 billion—the lowest in 10 months. However, the situation began to stabilize following the formation of the interim government, leading to a resurgence in remittances.
In August, remittance inflows rebounded to $2.22 billion, followed by $2.40 billion in September. October witnessed $2.39 billion in remittances, while November saw a slight decline with $2.19 billion recorded.
The consistent upward trend in remittances in recent months underscores the resilience and dedication of Bangladeshi expatriates. Their contributions continue to play a vital role in bolstering the country's foreign exchange reserves and supporting economic stability.
